Introduction

About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Life Sciences at the National Cheng Kung University. We are located in Tainan city, the oldest city in Taiwan. Our mission is to achieve excellence in teaching, research, and service to the country, and to provide the best programs in undergraduate and graduate education.

Our Department is comprised of 21 faculty members, 60 graduate students, 200 undergraduate students, and 4 departmental staff members. Our faculty members direct cutting edge research programs in three fields, Biomedicine, Genomics & Biotechnology, and Ecology. This research breadth allows us to tackle important questions in biology. Our faculty members have established long-term collaborations with other research institutes, including NCKU College of Medicine, Academic Sinica, Center for Conservation of Endemic Species, National Museum of Natural Sciences, National Marine Museum, Livestock Research Institute (Council of Agriculture), National Sun Yat-sen University, Tainan Science Park, National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan Sugar Corporation and Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center in teaching, training, and research. These collaborations strength our research, and provide great opportunities for our students with teaching and research career.

Research

Our Department offers courses and research training in three fields: Biomedicine, Genomics & Biotechnology, and Ecology. The breadth of courses and research programs provides our students with a broad knowledge of life sciences and exposes them to different points of view in understanding the world of life sciences. In addition, we commonly host conferences, and invite international scientists to give a seminar in our department. These activities provide our faculty and students great opportunities to collaborate with international science community.

Facilities and Resources

Our Department supplies researchers and students with variety of advanced scientific equipment. In addition to Department Core Facilities, researchers and students can also access to research resources in NCKU campus, such as DNA Sequencing & Bioinformatics Core, Biological Imaging Core, Flow Cytometry Core, and variety of core facility located in the campus.

Undergraduate Program

Our Departments offers students the opportunity to explore the various fields of current biology. These include molecular and cellular biology, genetics and genomics, evolution, and ecology. Students are exposed to modern concepts, and current methods of experimentation in molecular biology, biochemistry, proteomics, genomics, and bioinformatics. Outstanding and highly motivated students are offered opportunities for research projects in faculty laboratories, summer laboratory research, and internships. The faculty advisors are also available to provide guidance in career development.

Graduate Programs

Our Department creats a desirable interdisciplinary education environment for highly devoted students from Taiwan and abroad. We offer Master’s and Ph.D. degree training programs consisting of Biomedicine, Genomics & Biotechnology, and Ecology. Students are also provided with opportunities to gain teaching experiences by working as teaching assistants in undergraduate courses. We empower students broaden their horizons, inspire their passion, and acquire independent research ability to become leaders and innovators in their career.
