目前研究主題：

物種間的差異與分化是如何形成的，而在同一個族群裡，又是如何維持個體間外表與行為的多型性？這些不同層級的變異（variation）是如何產生，如何被維持，以及會延伸出怎樣的結果，是一件迷人的事情。要瞭解物種間與物種內多型性的產生與分化，需要從現行生物的行為生態下手，搭配遺傳學和基因體學的理論和技術，才能對於行為和型態多型性的演化成因和影響有深入的瞭解。

在瞭解物種間和物種內的差異與分化上，目前實驗室有兩大研究主軸，分別是物種分化與婚配策略。

 

物種分化（speciation）
從同一物種不同族群間出現分化開始，到形成完全的生殖隔離之間，通常是一個漫長又複雜的種化過程。在常見的情況下，來自生物或非生物的環境壓力，會藉由天擇促使兩族群產生適應性分化（adaptive divergence），性擇則常從旁輔佐，促進物種之間形成生殖隔離（reproductive isolation）。然而，這樣的種化機制可能會被兩族群之間的基因交流（gene flow）弱化。在這三者組成互相角力的情況之下（下圖），分化中的族群接下來會往哪個方向走，環境變遷是否會破壞當前的動態平衡，都是我們探討的方向。目前實驗室則是以中華珈蟌的兩個亞種作為主要研究對象，探究天擇，性擇，和基因交流三者對於這兩個豆娘亞種的影響。

婚配制度（mating systems）與婚配策略（mating strategy）

動物的婚配制度主要可以分成一夫一妻制，一夫多妻制，一妻多夫制，以及混交制。對於野生動物而言，婚配制度並非由一紙婚約限定，在同一種甚至同一個族群的個體中，也可能同時存在一種以上的婚配制度。我感興趣的，即是探討野生動物現行的婚配制度，是受到哪些生物或非生物的因子影響，是如何演化出來，又是如何被維持的。

在數個不同的婚配制度之中，一夫一妻制的雀形目鳥類特別引起我的興趣。在社會性行為上一夫一妻制的雀形目鳥類，絕大多數都存在外遇的行為。對於雄鳥來說，外遇可以增加他們子代的數量，而且他們通常並不需要照顧外遇產生的子代，所以這行為對他們是有利的。但對於雌鳥來說，過往研究發現在大多數鳥種中，外遇雌鳥的婚配對象（i.e.人類俗稱的老公）常常會減少自己提供的親代照顧，進而減少子代存活的機率。因為外遇行為對於雌鳥來說需要付出較高的代價，所以過往多半認為雌鳥可以從外遇中獲得其他好處，例如透過和體型較大，第二性徵比較明顯，或和雌鳥遺傳相容性比較高的雄性發生外遇，有助於產生生存能力和繁殖能力都比較好的子代。然而，近年來的整合性分析卻不支持這樣的結果，反而顯示外遇雄性和婚配雄性之間並沒有顯著差異（下圖）。我們目前的研究方向，即是要在這樣的結果下，探討還有哪些潛在的因素，讓雌鳥在必須得付出代價的情況下，依舊普遍地保有外遇的行為。
