Professor Takashi Gojobori is currently a Yushan Scholar in the Department of Life Sciences at National Cheng Kung University and a Professor-Emeritus at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He previously served as the Deputy Director of the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) in Japan and as a Distinguished Professor at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. He is internationally renowned for his research in molecular evolution and population genetics. Since 2006, he has been a member of Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts Sciences in the United States. Since 2007, he has been an Academician member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Moreover, he has been awarded honorary professor positions at several internationally recognized universities. In 2014, he received an honorary doctorate from NCKU. He has also served as an editor for multiple prominent international academic journals.
In 1996, Professor Gojobori supervised the doctoral studies of Japan’s Crown Prince Fumihito and collaborated with former Emperor Akihito on fish DNA evolution over 25 years, resulting in the publication of three joint papers in international academic journals. To date, he has published over 580 peer-reviewed articles in international academic journals. His research interests encompass evolutionary genomics and molecular evolution.
Professor Gojobori’s outstanding achievements include receiving the Kihara Memorial Foundation Academic Award in 1995 and being honored with the Purple Ribbon Medal of Honor of Japan in 2009 for his pioneering contributions to “Molecular Evolutionary Studies using Genome Information.” He is an Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), an ISCB (International Society for Computational Biology) Fellow, and an Advanced Country Fellow of the World Academy of Science for the Developing Countries (TWAS). Recently, he was awarded the Minister of Foreign Affairs Award for his contributions to scientific and technological cooperation between Japan and Saudi Arabia in 2024.
